Child Bereavement Course

This Child Bereavement Awareness Course is a sensitive and informative one-day training designed for professionals, caregivers, educators, and support workers who may encounter or support children and families affected by the death of a child. The course explores the unique nature of child loss, examining how grief manifests in parents, siblings, and extended family members, and the deep emotional and psychological impact it can have.

Participants will gain insight into the stages and types of grief, including complicated grief and trauma-related responses such as PTSD. The course also addresses cultural and spiritual perspectives around loss, providing a broader context for understanding different mourning practices and beliefs.

A key focus is on effective communication—what to say (and avoid), how to use empathy, silence, and listening, and specific approaches for supporting bereaved siblings. Practical strategies are shared to help create emotionally safe spaces, offer compassionate support, and understand when and how to refer to specialist services such as bereavement charities or counselling.

The training also considers the emotional impact on professionals, promoting self-care practices, boundary setting, and supervision to reduce burnout and vicarious trauma. By the end of the session, participants will feel better equipped to respond with confidence, care, and sensitivity in the face of profound loss.

A certificate will be issues on completion as proof of attendance and hours.
