What Students Can Expect from Counselling
Counselling sessions typically last approximately 50 minutes and provide students with a safe, confidential, and supportive space to explore any challenges they may be experiencing.
The counsellor's role is not to give advice, tell students what to do, or provide ready-made solutions. Instead, they offer empathy, understanding, and professional support, helping students explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences so they can gain greater self-awareness, build resilience, and find their own way forward.
Sessions are confidential and non-judgemental, allowing students to speak openly about whatever is affecting them. Confidentiality will only be broken in exceptional circumstances where there are concerns about safety or wellbeing, and this will always be explained clearly at the outset.
Counselling provides dedicated time away from the pressures of academic life, offering students an opportunity to reflect, process their experiences, and focus on their emotional wellbeing. The time between sessions can be equally valuable, allowing students to consider new insights, develop coping strategies, and begin making positive changes that support both their personal wellbeing and academic success.
