Holding Hope
|
Holding Hope is a comprehensive two-day suicide intervention training programme designed to equip participants with the confidence, knowledge, and practical skills needed to support people experiencing suicide distress.
Developed by Listening 2 U, this unique training combines contemporary suicide research, trauma-informed practice, attachment theory, relational approaches, and practical intervention skills to help participants navigate difficult conversations with compassion and confidence.
Unlike many traditional suicide prevention courses that focus primarily on assessment and procedures, Holding Hope places human connection at the heart of intervention. Participants learn how to recognise distress, create emotional safety, explore suicide conversations directly and compassionately, and support individuals towards safety, support, and hope.

Why Holding Hope?
People experiencing suicide distress are often not looking for someone to fix them. More often, they are looking for someone who is willing to listen, understand, and stay alongside them during moments of overwhelming emotional pain.
Many individuals never directly say:
"I want to die."
Instead, distress may be communicated through:
Holding Hope helps participants recognise these signs and respond in ways that promote connection, safety, and hope.

Many individuals never directly say:
"I want to die."
Instead, distress may be communicated through:
- Withdrawal and isolation
- Emotional shutdown
- Hopelessness
- Anger or irritability
- Substance use
- Risk-taking behaviours
- Feelings of being a burden
- Loss of purpose or meaning
- Statements such as "I can't do this anymore"
Holding Hope helps participants recognise these signs and respond in ways that promote connection, safety, and hope.
The LISTEN Model
At the heart of Holding Hope is the LISTEN Model, a unique suicide intervention framework developed by Listening 2 U to support compassionate, relational, and effective conversations with people experiencing suicide distress.
The model provides participants with a structured approach that helps guide conversations from initial concerns through to safety, support, and hope. It is designed to be practical, memorable, and adaptable across a wide range of professional, voluntary, community, healthcare, and educational settings.
Unlike approaches that focus solely on assessment or risk management, the LISTEN Model places human connection, emotional safety, and compassionate engagement at the centre of intervention.
Throughout the two-day programme, participants learn how to apply the framework through realistic scenarios, reflective practice, skills development exercises, and guided discussions.
The model is explored in depth during the training and forms a central part of the Holding Hope learning experience.

A Trauma-Informed Approach
Holding Hope recognises that many people experiencing suicide distress have lived through trauma, loss, abuse, neglect, rejection, or significant adversity.
Participants learn how trauma can influence emotional regulation, coping strategies, relationships, help-seeking behaviours, and experiences of hopelessness or entrapment.
The training promotes a compassionate, trauma-informed approach that prioritises emotional safety, dignity, autonomy, and human connection.
A certificate of attendance is issued upon completion.
