Listening 2 U offers counselling student placements for trainee counsellors looking to gain valuable hands-on experience in a supportive, professional environment. Our rolling recruitment programme runs throughout the year, welcoming dedicated volunteer counsellors who are passionate about promoting positive mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Applying for a Student Counselling Placement

Completing the application form is the first step in our placement process. Applications are assessed on suitability, motivation, and readiness to work within a trauma-informed, person-centred environment.

What to Expect During the Application Process
Please note: An offer of a counselling student placement does not constitute an offer of employment.
- Shortlisting: Applications are reviewed and shortlisted based on suitability and training stage.
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates are invited for an interview to discuss experience, goals, and placement expectations.
- Conditional Offer: Successful applicants receive a placement offer subject to DBS checks and satisfactory references.
- Induction Training: All successful applicants must attend compulsory induction training in Lincoln.
- Remote placements will include online induction options.

Student Counsellor Placements at Listening 2 U
Joining Listening 2 U as a Student Counsellor offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with real clients in a safe, supportive, and professional environment.
Our placements are open to counselling students working with clients aged 16 and above, with occasional opportunities to support younger clients depending on service needs and training level.
We are passionate about supporting the next generation of counsellors and provide structured placements that promote growth, confidence, and ethical practice.

Student Counselling Placement Commitment
We ask students to commit to their placement for the duration of their studies and to continue working with clients until sessions naturally conclude.
During your placement, you will:
If clients are based locally, we will do our best to match your availability, though this may depend on room and service capacity.

- See a minimum of 3 clients per week (subject to client availability)
- Manage your own diary and arrange client appointments directly
- Maintain clear boundaries and adhere to Listening2U’s ethical framework

Supervision Requirements
At Listening 2 U, supervision is a core requirement and an essential part of maintaining high standards of care.
Our supervision policy follows professional guidelines to ensure safe, reflective, and ethical practice:
We may offer free monthly group supervision (placement-related). You may count 30 minutes of this towards your required supervision hours.
All additional supervision must be completed with one of our approved supervisors.
Supervision attendance is non-negotiable. Failure to attend required supervision may result in termination of your placement, as it is a core element of professional responsibility and client safety.

- 1 hour of supervision per 8 counselling hours, or
- 1.5 hours of supervision per calendar month, whichever comes first
