Student Counsellor Placements at Listening 2 U
Joining us as a Student Counsellor offers you a valuable opportunity to work primarily with clients aged 16 and over. Occasionally, there may also be opportunities to work with younger clients, depending on service needs and your training.
We are committed to supporting you throughout your placement. You’ll benefit from access to training opportunities (offered at a reduced cost), as well as additional resources to support your professional and personal development. We have successfully supported students and volunteers from a variety of counselling courses, colleges, schools, and universities—and are proud to have seen many progress into fully qualified practitioners.
Placement Commitment
We ask that you commit to the full duration of your studies and continue working with your assigned clients until their sessions conclude. During your placement, you will be expected to:
- See a minimum of 3 clients per week (subject to client availability).
- Manage your own diary, including contacting clients directly to arrange appointments.
If your clients are based locally, we will do our best to accommodate your availability, though this may be subject to room availability and service needs.
Supervision Requirements
To maintain the high standards of support we offer, attending supervision is essential.
- We may provide monthly group supervision at no cost. You may count 30 minutes of this group session toward your required supervision hours.
- You are required to use one of our approved supervisors for your remaining supervision hours.
- Our supervision policy is non-negotiable:
- 1 hour of supervision per 8 hours of counselling, or
- 1.5 hours of supervision per calendar month, whichever comes first.
If group supervision is not available, the full 1.5 hours per calendar month or 1 hour per 8 counselling hours must be completed with an approved supervisor.
Failure to attend supervision will result in the termination of your placement, as this is a core requirement to ensure the quality and integrity of our services.
Taking up a placement with us as a Student Counsellor you will be offered the opportunity to primarily work with ages 16 plus, although there may be occasions that you may have the opportunity to work with young people.
We will support you where needed throughout your time with us. There are opportunities for training (at a reduced cost) and other information that you can apply to your professional and personal development. We have experience of supporting students and volunteers from a wide range of 1:1, schools, colleges and universities and have proudly seen many of our students develop into fully qualified practitioners during their time with us.
We ask that you commit yourself to this placement for the duration of your studies and the end of the block of session you are currently working on with the client. During this time, you will be asked to see a minimum of 3 clients per week (Availability of clients permitting). You will contact clients directly and arrange your own client appointments and manage your own diary.
If your clients are local, we will strive to fit your placement around your commitments, but restrictions might apply – depending on room availability and service delivery needs.
We may offer monthly supervision (placement related) this is free and is group supervision. You will be able to use 1/2 an hour of this group supervision towards your monthly supervision. You are required to use one of the approved supervisors on our list for the remaining supervision you will need to meet our requirements of 1 hour supervision to every 8 hours counselling or 1.5 hours supervision per calendar month whichever comes sooner. (This is not negotiable)
If we do not run group supervision you are required to have 1.5 hours supervision per calendar month or 1 hour supervision for every 8 hours counselling you do whichever comes sooner. (This is not negotiable)
In order to work as a student Counsellor, you are required to attend all forms of supervision, this is to ensure that Listening 2 U maintains high standards of service. We are not able to offer placements to Volunteers who do not attend this supervision; failure to attend will result in termination of the placement.
Time Commitment
The minimum time commitment is 3 hours per week and 4 to 5 hours one week per month - to allow time to attend group supervision. When considering volunteering at Listening 2 U you will need to ensure that you have this time available in your weekly schedule.
